He's a man with no conscience. A man hopelessly in love.

Bastard-born gentleman, Gregory Harrow, has decided that the Baroness of Iliffe will be his and his alone. It matters not what the young widow is hiding from, who he must kill, or what lies he shall weave to have his way.

DARK SIDE OF THE SUN is a full-length regency era dark romance from USA Today bestselling author Addison Cain about depravity, desire, and acute retribution.

I liked this a lot. I liked it enough to reread and recommend this to those who are OK with the triggers. I was actually surprised that Addison Cain wrote this. Talk about talent and versatility! Wow!

The writing in this book was reminiscent of old school historical romances with almost a gothic (Victoria Holt) vibe. Is the H a good guy who really loves the h? Or is he a bad guy lying to her? At times it created a disconnect for me and other times was a major driving force in the story. As an example, the first smex scene (at about 29%) was a bit weird for me. It was poetically written, stayed true to the voice of the story but was so vague at certain points that I was confused as to what they were even doing. It didn't work for me. I was praying that the next smex scene would be written in a more traditional fashion so I could enjoy it. Thankfully, it was.

The H is an anti-hero and a major a*s to other people but not to the h. He treats her well and there's no abuse. There's bantering between the two and he does say mean things one time but it's very brief. His intent is to get her to stand up for herself against those who have grievously wronged her. He is possessive of her. He's protective of her, wants to marry her and doesn't care about her past. He seeks to avenge her of the horrific wrongs done to her. He doesn't cheat on her though he "appears" to be courting the neighbor's daughter. The reason for this is revealed at the end.

The h was likeable. She is a not a sarcastic, winey B. She's a survivor who was abused by her first husband. The abuse she suffered was horrific. We are given the facts that this abuse happened but thankfully we don't experience it first hand. For those that need warnings -

Her husband bought her from her father at age 15 and raped her on the altar of the church right after they were married. He then humiliated her by parading her around after the rape in her bloodied wedding dress. He also kept her in a cell with no light for 6 months, starved her, beat her, raped her repeatedly and shared her with his friends who also raped her. His abuse almost killed her.

This book easily could've been 5 stars and a top favorite of mine but the ending was too rushed and the 3 paragraph epilogue not enough to satisfy me. It ended at 93%. Though it did have a HEA, I wanted more and was disappointed. I also didn't believe in the "love" between the H and h. He wanted her, yes but there was an emotional distance between the two. Also, there wasn't a lot of descriptive smex. The descriptive scenes were here a few times but many times, the couple was intimate and we, the reader are merely told that it occurred. I found myself wanting more between the H and h. More interaction, more smex, more love. A longer ending and epilogue would have helped immensely.

Overall, I liked the story, liked the H and h and will reread again.

Dark Side of the Sun Addison Cain 9780998676746 Books Reviews

Dark Side of the Sun by Addison Cain is not only the first book I’ve read by this author but also the first historical dark romance I’ve read. I am not typically one to read historical romances but I’ve found myself reading more dark stories lately and the synopsis grabbed my attention.
The book read at a slower pace than I am used to, possibly because it isn’t as dark as some of my recent reads. Overall I think Dark Side of the Sun is a strong story, the setting and genre are just new to me. I felt like the characters were strong, even if frustrating, love to hate type characters at times and the chemistry was well illustrated. The epilogue was very short but to the point but I felt it wrapped the book up well. I’d give Dark Side of the Sun 3 stars personally but I plan on reading more of Addison Cain’s work in the future.
This was a different piece of work compared to all the other ones I have read from this author.
Truthfully, this book has sat in my library for a while. I didn’t know if I would like it. Why I waited is beyond me. I love this author’s work even it’s not the norm.

Gregory had me at hello. He’s the alpha type, the one that gets stuff done and doesn’t take no for an answer.

Arabella is a wild child. She’s the imp. Always barefoot and covered in mud. Her past has made her that way. She hates to be touched, not a fan of people in general. So when her neighbor takes an interest in her, things happen that are out of her control.

This book was gripping from beginning to end. I loved every word.
It took me a while to get around to reading this book from my favorite author of the moment. Admittedly, the sci fi Sigil is what drew me to the author and the other stories I read by her were my fixes for when new installments of said series would arrive. Period/historical era pieces are not my thing, and as this was one of her earlier writings, I was nervous. Fact of life authors and their subsequent writings are like wine. My apprehensive thoughts were for naught. While it wasn't as sweet and endearing as A Trick of Light, it was deviously fun for the entire journey. I prefer the author's more nuanced, darker later writings and yet Dark Side of the Sun's DNA is suffused with the author's penchant for twists, stomach turning circumstances and wiley characters. The banter between Gregory and Arabella show considerable skill on the author's part. I'm a fan and grateful to have found this reading mainstay of an author. I trust what scant reading time I have left in this author's impeccably capable hands.
***3 stars***
Dark Side of the Sun by Addison Cain

I give Dark Side of the Sun by Addison Cain a 3 Star rating. It is described as a regency era dark romance and while I don’t usually read historical romances, and had no clue what the regency era referred to, I was intrigued by this one being described as a “dark” romance. The story kept to the historical side of things in how the language was written. Since it’s not my usual style of writing, I found that a bit difficult to get into, but I appreciate the way it was true to the time period. This novel had love, suspense, and revenge.

I admit, I didn’t love this book. I’m not sure if it’s the historical side of things when I’m more used to contemporary novels, or if it was the characters and storyline that threw me off. The way the sex scenes were described didn’t work for me either. I did appreciate that Gregory remained true to his bad nature throughout the story. I would’ve been disappointed otherwise. I didn’t love his character though, nor did I love Arabella. Overall, the story was interesting and a change from my “usual” reads.

I give the book 3 stars, but I’m sure those that are more accustomed to historical romances would be able to get more deeply involved in the story and enjoy the writing even more than I was able to. The writing was very descriptive, but a bit too flowery for my taste.
I liked this a lot. I liked it enough to reread and recommend this to those who are OK with the triggers. I was actually surprised that Addison Cain wrote this. Talk about talent and versatility! Wow!
